"In accordance with Article 9 of the Law of 8 December 1993" On the administrative and territorial structure of the Republic of Kazakhstan "I decree: 1. Rename the city of Astana - the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the city of Nur-Sultan - the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 2. This decree comes into force with the day of its first official publication, "- said in a statement. In addition, President Tokayev signed amendments to the country's Constitution. Nur-Sultan - the new name of the capital of Kazakhstan Recall that the President of Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev suggested that the capital of Kazakhstan be renamed Nur-Sultan immediately after it took the oath to the people of Kazakhstan. The government proposed the President to hold a republican referendum to amend the Constitution to change the name of Astana. President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev submitted to the Parliament a proposal to rename the capital without a referendum. The Constitutional Council presented a positive opinion on this issue. As a result, the Parliament approved the renaming of Astana to Nur-Sultan.
